Sensogenomics is an emerging research field that began in 2017 within the GenPoB and GenVip research groups at the Health Research Institute (IDIS) of the Clínico Hospital of Santiago de Compostela. It involves over 40 researchers and a broad network of national and international collaborators, including renowned institutions such as Imperial College London, Genomic Institute of Singapore, Oxford Gene Technology, Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù, PENTA Foundation, Oxford University, and Bristol University, among others.

For over 15 years, the GenPoB and GenVip groups have been working together in various fields of scientific research, always with a strong multidisciplinary approach. Their focus is on “omic” strategies (integrating disciplines such as genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, immunosequencing, cell biology, gene editing, etc.) to tackle diseases using cutting-edge technologies.

It has also developed and is conducting over 110 clinical trials involving more than 2,000 subjects. The GenPoB/GenVip research group has been recognized for its excellence, being the only unit in Spain to receive the INSPIRE Award for vaccines. In recent years, the research group has participated in clinical trials for various vaccine candidates, including those for pneumococcus, HPV, meningococcus, influenza virus, and RSV, among others.

With an impact factor exceeding 5000 (JCR 2021), state-of-the-art technologies, and access to competitive funding and grants, these research groups are at the forefront of international research. Currently, the group is developing six projects funded by the Carlos III Health Institute and eight large-scale European projects—a milestone achieved by very few research groups, highlighting the group’s prominence and competitiveness.

Sensogenomics currently has ongoing research projects with groups directly involved in the project in France, Belgium, Italy, the United Kingdom, and other countries. In 2019, Sensogenomics established a close collaboration with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia (RFG), an institution of internationally recognized prestige in the field of music. The synergy created through the collaboration between IDIS and the RFG represents a milestone in highly successful multidisciplinary collaboration. Thus, Sensogenomics is a truly unique global project grounded in a solid scientific base that includes medicine (with a particular focus on neuroscience and psychiatry), other branches of health sciences (such as psychology), and genetics. In the educational and cultural realm, the importance of music and its connection to health is well recognized (for example, in research on affect and emotions, mood, anxiety, etc.). The global Sensogenomics research group is the backbone of a multidisciplinary effort involving musicians, musicologists, psychologists, cultural managers, historians, educators, primary and secondary school teachers, university lecturers, pediatricians, neurologists, geneticists, nurses, pharmacists, bioinformaticians, mathematicians, and more.

“The Santiago Health Research Institute (IDIS) is a biomedical research center with a strong translational focus that leverages the synergies of the University Hospital Complex of Santiago de Compostela (CHUS) and the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) to drive, promote, and foster excellence in research, scientific and technological knowledge, and its subsequent application to the productive sector, as well as education and training. The clear goal is to improve public health. Currently, 1,161 individuals are part of 99 research groups, which are organized into 6 research areas.”
